Here at Abbey Roofing we’re always looking for an opportunity to give back to our local community. After all, we’re a friendly local firm who likes to make a difference! In fact, we recently donated our roofing materials to help the Dacorum Borough Council Youth Tenant Involvement Team. They do a magnificent job of teaching new skills to young people aged 10-18, so they can give something back to their local community, too. It was truly a joint effort from several organisations. The bird and bat boxes were designed and delivered by members of Greenwich Mencap, a support group where adults…

Preparing Your Roof For Winter

November 24, 2023

Harsh winter weather can damage roofs, especially older or lower-quality ones, making it essential to inspect roofs before the season starts to prevent costly repairs. Common winter roofing problems include condensation (due to poor insulation), ice dams (caused by melting and refreezing snow), and icicles (linked to clogged gutters and downspouts). To minimise these issues, ensure proper attic insulation and ventilation, keep gutters clean, and remove snow carefully from the roof edges. Regularly inspect the attic for signs of damage, such as leaks or wood rot, and consider hiring a roofing professional to assess and maintain the roof before problems worsen….

Clear Debris and Drains: Regularly remove debris such as leaves from flat roofs to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to leaks. Also, ensure drains are unblocked to avoid roof damage during heavy rainfall. Inspect for Membrane Damage: Check for any cracks or weak spots on the roof membrane, as these can worsen in bad weather. Small issues can be repaired with a patching kit, but larger damage may require professional attention. Timely Repairs: Address any damage promptly to prevent escalation, as delaying repairs could lead to major issues like roof collapse, especially during winter. Professional Assistance: If repairs are extensive, seeking…

Traditional Mortar Method: Mortar has historically been used to fix ridge tiles on roofs, making it suitable for heritage properties. However, mortar can degrade over time due to weak mixes and environmental factors, raising concerns about its longevity. Dry Ridge System: This modern method uses screws or mechanical fixings to secure tiles without mortar. It includes waterproof unions to manage rainfall, making it more durable and weather-resistant than mortar. Advantages of Dry Ridge: Dry ridge systems are easier to install, require less maintenance, are sturdier in high winds, allow for roof movement, and provide better ventilation, reducing condensation. Current Trends: Dry…

Key Difference: Slates offer a luxurious and traditional aesthetic, ideal for period homes, while tiles, available in various colours and designs, are more suited for modern properties. Slates: Natural slates, made from metamorphic rock, are durable, fire-resistant, and low-maintenance but are more expensive. They provide a textured look but can reduce wind resistance, potentially leading to displacement. Tiles: Made from concrete or clay, tiles are easier to install and come in a wide range of designs. They have a life expectancy of around 50 years and are better for roofs with complex structures like skylights or chimneys. Installation and Costs: Concrete…

Tiles: Commonly made from clay, tiles are durable, aesthetically pleasing, and resistant to fire, rot, and insects. However, they are heavy, requiring potential roof reinforcement, and fragile, making professional repairs necessary. Metal Roofing: Known for durability and energy efficiency, metal roofs are lightweight, low-maintenance, and fire-resistant. Despite high initial costs, they are long-lasting, making them a solid investment. Lead: Often used for roof flashings, lead is strong, affordable, and long-lasting. However, its toxicity, environmental concerns, and limited global supply are significant downsides. Torch-on Felt: Popular for flat roofs, torch-on felt is durable, waterproof, and versatile, but requires regular maintenance, skilled installation,…
